Netflix has used its tenth anniversary in India to deepen its partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture, signalling a significant convergence of entertainment, tourism and cultural branding. The two partners have launched an ‘As Seen on Netflix’ section on the Incredible India website, allowing audiences to explore destinations, cultural traditions and experiences featured in Netflix India films and series. The initiative was unveiled by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi.
From Content Consumption to Travel Consideration
The activation builds on the memorandum of understanding signed last year between the Ministry of Tourism and Netflix India. Beyond promotion, it attempts to convert screen engagement into real-world travel interest by connecting entertainment narratives with Indian locations, heritage experiences and cultural traditions.
The NGMA event also featured a discussion on storytelling’s role in promoting India’s tourism and cultural identity, along with the premiere of two films focused on wildlife and cultural heritage.
OTT Meets Destination Marketing
For the advertising and media ecosystem, the move reflects the growing importance of content-led destination marketing. Global streaming platforms are increasingly influencing travel aspiration, search behaviour and cultural curiosity, creating opportunities for tourism boards, state governments and brands to integrate with entertainment ecosystems rather than relying solely on conventional travel advertising.
As India positions itself as both a major content producer and a tourism destination, such collaborations could evolve into measurable tourism funnels linking OTT viewership with travel discovery, bookings and regional economic impact.
The Last Word
The next frontier of tourism marketing is not just showcasing destinations—it is embedding them inside stories audiences already choose to watch.
