Hearst Takes Full Control of A+E Global Media

Hearst has agreed to acquire The Walt Disney Company's 50% stake in A+E Global Media for approximately $1.2 billion in cash, according to a report by Deadline.

The transaction, expected to close in September, will conclude the companies' long-standing 50-50 joint ownership, making A+E Global Media a wholly owned business within Hearst's Entertainment division.

The deal brings iconic brands including A&E, History, Lifetime and FYI entirely under Hearst's control, giving the company greater strategic flexibility in content, licensing and global distribution.

Betting on Scale and Intellectual Property

Paul Buccieri will continue as President and Chairman of A+E Global Media, reporting to Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz. Buccieri said the company's competitive advantage lies in the strength of its brands, strategic partnerships and extensive owned content library, adding that A+E is well positioned to extend its intellectual property across platforms and international markets.

Swartz thanked Disney for decades of partnership and reaffirmed Hearst's commitment to supporting A+E's leadership as it expands its programming and brand portfolio.

Joint Venture Ends After Decades

The acquisition reflects a wider shift in global media, where companies are simplifying ownership structures to accelerate decision-making, maximise content monetisation and strengthen direct control over valuable intellectual property. As streaming and digital platforms intensify competition, owning premium content libraries has become a strategic necessity rather than a financial luxury.

The Last Word

In today's media economy, control over intellectual property—not just content creation—is becoming the defining currency of long-term competitive advantage.
