Ampstar: JSW’s New Bet On India’s Electric Trucking Future

Ampstar: JSW’s New Bet On India’s Electric Trucking Future

India’s commercial vehicles have long carried a distinct visual culture. Painted cabins, tassels and the familiar “Horn. OK. Please.” have become part of the category’s identity.

JSW Group is now looking to rewrite that narrative with Ampstar, its dedicated electric commercial vehicle (ECV) brand.

From Truck Art To Electric Utility

Endorsed as “Ampstar: powered by JSW”, the brand will build a portfolio spanning electric buses and heavy-duty trucks. The larger vehicles are expected to cost around ₹80 lakh per vehicle, placing the proposition firmly in the premium commercial mobility segment. Ampstar sits within JSW Greentech Limited, part of the $63-billion JSW Group.

Building A Wider Electric Mobility Portfolio

By 2027, Ampstar plans to introduce heavy tippers and 7- to 18-metre electric buses for city, intercity, staff and school transportation. The next phase is expected around 2029–2030, with light commercial vehicles including delivery vans and small cargo trucks.

The portfolio gives JSW an opportunity to build a broader electric mobility ecosystem rather than compete around a single vehicle category. It also creates multiple consumer and business touchpoints across logistics, public transport and fleet mobility.

The move complements the group’s wider automotive ambitions. JSW MG Motor India operates in passenger cars, while JSW Motors is preparing an independent passenger EV line.

The Last Word

Ampstar signals a shift from electric cars to electric utility. For marketers, the bigger opportunity lies in making commercial electrification a brand story, not just a technology proposition.
