OpenAI has officially introduced advertising in India, extending its monetisation strategy to one of its largest global user markets as the company accelerates revenue growth ahead of a widely anticipated initial public offering (IPO).
The advertising model will be limited to logged-in adult users on the Free plan and the Go subscription, priced at Rs 399 per month. Premium subscribers across Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education will continue to experience an entirely ad-free interface.
Privacy-first model shapes advertiser access
Sponsored content will appear below ChatGPT responses, clearly separated from AI-generated output and labelled as advertisements. OpenAI has also excluded users under 18 years from seeing ads and will not display promotions alongside sensitive or regulated topics, including politics, physical health and mental health.
The company has emphasised that advertising will not influence ChatGPT's responses. Brands will not receive access to chat histories, user memories or personally identifiable information.
A measured play for AI advertising
The India rollout reflects OpenAI's effort to balance commercial expansion with user trust. By restricting ads to select subscription tiers while reinforcing privacy safeguards, the company is attempting to establish a sustainable advertising model without compromising the credibility of its AI experience.
Instead, advertisers will only be provided with aggregated campaign metrics, including impressions and click-through performance.
The Last Word
As generative AI evolves into a mainstream consumer platform, OpenAI's India launch could redefine digital media buying. The long-term differentiator will not be ad inventory alone, but how effectively AI platforms monetise engagement while preserving transparency, privacy and user confidence.
